YO ACAP was created in 1989 to specifically address the issues relating to the transmission and prevention of HIV within the African American youth and young adult population in the entire city of Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Since that time, YO ACAP has become an important, recognized and vital link within the HIV/AIDS service delivery system established in the Philadelphia region. During its nine years in existence, YO ACAP has continued to formally expand its programs and services in keeping with the priorities of the local Community Planning Group. In accomplishing this, YO ACAP has been able to establish an integrated service delivery system, which also addresses: dysfunctional families, human sexuality, substance abuse, educational/career opportunities, peer pressure, violence. Through this comprehensive and integrated approach, YO ACAP continues to fulfill its mission. YO ACAP applies a cultural and ethnic methodology to the provision of prevention/intervention programs and services to address the current life-compromising situations and problems that affect African Americans in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

YO ACAP provides services on site, concentrating most of its resources on the areas severely impacted by the most critical and life threatening health and social problems facing urban Philadelphia and surrounding areas. YO ACAP has satellite facilities in North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, Germantown and Oaklane. By implementing community based services directly in these areas of the city and employing staff and volunteers who are also residents, YO ACAP provides quality services for which the targeted populations have been receptive. By placing a high value on the impact of consumers of services, local residents and organizations, and other service providers, YO ACAP continues to plan, implement, and evaluate all of its current and proposed services with the full acceptance and support of its constituency.

Above all else, YO ACAP is a family. Every one of the young people who comes through our doors are sent for a reason, and we treat each individual that way. We help teach each young person what they need to know to survive the circumstances they are in. We try to instill values of interdependence and respect, but most of all self respect.

Join in our struggle to help save the lives of young people.

Sincerely,

Linda L.Burnette
